content and copywriting faqs

What's the difference between copywriting and content writing?

These day, the lines are somewhat blurred. But I tend think of it this way: content = longer-format, on the internet, not solely focused on sales and conversions. Copy = snappy, almost entirely sales focused, can be online or off.

How much do you charge for professional copywriting services?

I price my services two ways: 1. We agree on a fixed fee based on project requirements. 2. I charge per hour and track time. I am always transparent when it comes to pricing, so if you’d like a quick quote, just ask. 😊

Are your content and copywriting services only available in Bristol?

Nope. I’ve worked with clients in Australia, The Netherlands, Greece, and all over the UK. If you just so happen to stumble across me and live on the other side of the world, we might be able to make something work… but let’s talk time zones first!

How long does it typically take to complete a copywriting project?

I try to give clients a rough time estimation, but it varies depending on the industry, subject, SEO needs (or lack thereof), number of words, amount of research, tone, etc. I’ve done 1,000-word blogs that have taken two hours and others that have taken five.

how do you feel about ai for copywriting?

My stance on this simple: I’ve worked in tech companies. I’ve been a digital marketer. I’ve written about and promoted LLMs. I know there are copywriters using AI to complete work quicker. So, am I against AI for copywriting? Not in the slightest. But, as a copy and content writer, it’s important for me to continue developing my writing every day. Does AI help me become a better writer? In my opinion, no (or, at least, not yet). And while I might use ChatGPT to find a synonym or replace the odd sentence, it’s not something I rely on.

What information do you need from me before starting a copywriting project?

Before I begin any copywriting project, I like to find out as much as possible about who you are, what you do, what you want to achieve, and how you’d like me to help you get there. This can be via video call, in person, or even by email.

On the admin side of things, it’s fairly quick to get the ball rolling. Usually, I’ll take a few basic details from you. Then, we’ll agree terms, sort the contract, and we’re ready to get started.

What makes a good copywriting brief?

When it comes to briefing, it’s entirely up to you how much info you provide. For me, the best briefs contain obvious objectives and deliverables, a clear TOV, a bit of context, and a couple of relevant examples.

Briefs that are too short can mean the project takes longer (especially if I’m writing about something new and need to research or ask questions). Too long or inflexible, and they can end up feeling a bit prescriptive. This can sometimes limit the project’s potential.

Simplicity always wins, so as long as those key ingredients are in there, you’re good to go.

How do you maintain my brand's voice while writing copy?

As I mentioned above, it’s always handy for me to have tone of voice info. Sometimes, I’ll get an entire style guide to follow. Other times, I’ll need to figure out the best TOV to use for your brand.

If there aren’t any guidelines in place, I tend to study the tone you already use and enhance this. If you have a tone/style in mind but aren’t already using it, grab a few examples, and I’ll use them for reference.

HOW important is SPELLING, GRAMMAR, AND PUNCTUATION in copywriting?

Spelling matters. That includes using the right words for your targeted region. But the rest depends on your audience and what you’re communicating.

It’s a good idea to care about correct punctuation and grammar but, unless you’re some sort of publishing house or prestigious academic institution, I wouldn’t suggest prioritising these things way above style, tone, and flow.

As you can see, I like an Oxford comma. I enjoy the aesthetic of an em dash. But, in all honesty, it’s easy to get bogged down by stuff that can actually make your writing sound clunky.

TL;DR: I may have a copy of ‘Eats, Shoots & Leaves’ on my book shelf, but I’m not a total purist. Clarity comes first.

Will I have the opportunity to request revisions to the copy?

Absolutely. Your feedback is invaluable to me — especially in the early stages.

While my aim is always to get it right first time, I understand that some briefs may require a bit of back and fourth to refine ideas. As always, the clearer you can make the brief, the better.

I include revision terms within our contract, so you’ll know exactly where you stand.

Do you offer SEO copywriting services?

Another big, fat YES. I care about SEO and keep a close eye on any new info to ensure I never miss a Google algorithm update. (Let’s be honest — there are a lot of them.)

I tend to use client keyword tools to carry out any SEO work, but if you don’t have access to one, it’s no big deal. There are always other options…
